Potassium Permanganate Activated Alumina

Potassium permanganate is an oxidizing agent commonly used to cleanse organic impurities and bacteria from skin surfaces, though due to being classified as an industrial chemical instead of medicine only one study of its effectiveness against Staphylococcus aureus has been completed.

The invention relates to the production of granular activated alumina impregnated uniformly throughout with solid oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate. After partially rehydrating and curing, this alumina product may then be sold.

Active potassium permanganate activated alumina has the unique property to harness its powerful oxidizing power to decompose and purify harmful gases in the atmosphere, with high removal efficiency for hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, formaldehyde, formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide etc.

Method for Producing Alumina Impregnated With Potassium Permanganate includes: (a) Calcinating an alumina trihydrate until a nodular nodule forms with an ignition loss between 5-8% by weight and is capable of partial rehydration, (b) Combining this nodular alumina with an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate at 2%-4% MnO on dry basis and simultaneously curing and curing these agglomerates until partial rehydration takes place; (c) drying these cured cured agglomerates to remove uncombined water therefrom; and drying to remove uncombined water therefrom;

Alumina impregnated with potassium can be employed for treating wastewater, adsorbing phenols and organic acids, acting as a catalyst in producing urea and ammonium nitrate and purifying industrial gases; drying petroleum products as drying agent, purification of industrial gases as purifier of industrial gases and purifying airstreams of ethylene from airstreams as an air adsorbent agent and as an ideal substitute to activated carbon in terms of absorption of lower molecular weight compounds such as ethylene from airstreams.

Air Purification

Alumina boasts an extremely large surface area, making it the ideal material to transport potassium permanganate. By heating the alumina to high temperatures and creating highly porous layers, alumina becomes ideal for carrying permanganate with ease and is widely used for applications like water treatment and air purification.

Adsorption properties make this product an effective solution for eliminating harmful gases from the atmosphere, such as hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, chlorine formaldehyde and nitric oxide. Decomposing harmful gas into their component parts provides air purification.

With its strong oxidizing property, this alumina can also serve as a disinfectant and deodorizer. Nadalje, its strong adsorption capabilities can be reused within an oxygen-generating system to continually sterilize the environment and ensure continued cleansing and sterilization efforts.

FEECO offers an Innovation Center equipped to conduct thermal and agglomeration testing at batch and pilot scale, gathering process and material data and optimizing them for production conditions in order to produce products specifically tailored to customer applications.

Activated Alumina Desiccants that include granular potassium permanganate impregnated with KMnO4 have proven highly effective at controlling various gases. When combined with granular activated carbon (GAC), they offer greater contamination control compared to GAC alone.

Gas Absorption

Activated alumina has numerous uses, from dry scrubbing air filtration systems designed to control multiple contaminants indoors and outdoors, to multiple dry-scrubbing filters used together in combination to tackle gases and odors found in the environment.

OdorCarbTM Ultra is FEECO’s productan impregnated activated carbon sphere impregnated with potassium permanganate designed to provide superior odor removal by providing superior adsorption capacity, such as H2S removal. Nadalje, its greater surface area than other similar products results in reduced pressure drop during filter system operation and reduces pressure drop costs significantly. Available with an 8% concentration KMnO4, these 55lb bags of media offer exceptional value.

Permanganate-impregnated alumina is produced by spraying a solution of potassium permanganate over partially calcined alumina that is being nodulized, thus evenly dispersing an oxidizing agent throughout its mass.

This new impregnation process offers several significant advantages over its traditional counterparts for producing alumina composites. First and foremost, it reduces the number of steps required for production; additionally, potassium permanganate levels required may be lower due to this approach compared with traditional processes used to create support materials for such composites.

Chemical Processing

Activated alumina impregnated with potassium permanganate is widely utilized for water and air purification systems to remove organic impurities, bacteria, harmful gases and contaminants from the atmosphere. Alumina acts as a carrier for this oxidizing agent which further breaks down pollutants or gases present in the atmosphere.

Producing activated alumina requires pelletizing an alumina starting material, evacuating its pores to clear them out, then impregnating with an oxidizing agent of choice and drying off to remove any residual water. In general, 2.5-3.0% KMnO4 concentration on an oven-dry basis should suffice to ensure both physical and chemical stability; any concentration higher may cause plugging of pores reducing media absorption capabilities.

Potassium permanganate, also known by its chemical formula KMnO4, is an inorganic compound with the formula KMnO4. Its primary uses include antifungal and antibacterial protection in commercial products like hair colorants, dishwashing liquids, insecticides, and hair colorant additives. Nadalje, potassium permanganate plays a significant role in some chemical production processes like producing petroleum fuelall while being potentially toxic when inhaled; symptoms of exposure include gastrointestinal upset, eye irritation, skin hardening/staining/hardening of skin hardening/staining as well as ulcers in both mouth and intestines.
