High Adsorption Capacity
Activated alumina has an exceptional specific surface area with open mesopores and numerous highly active tetra-coordinate AlO4 sites, all contributing to its exceptional adsorption capacity. Adsorption isotherms and pore size distribution curves show this to be effective for metal ion adsorption at pH values between 8.5-6 (Fig 3).
Bentonite, attapulgite and kaolin are popularly used to remove arsenic from groundwater; however, their effectiveness is limited by low absorption capacities (8-56 mg g-1), high amounts of generated sludge and difficulty of regeneration. As a result, new materials must be developed or existing ones improved to maximize performance and environmental safety.
FTIR, XRD and SEM-EDX tests were carried out to investigate raw natural and chemically activated zeolite from the Zlatokop deposit in Russia in order to confirm its well-defined crystal alumino-silicate structure. Adsorption tests indicated these materials could potentially serve as potential candidates for copper(II) removal from water solutions.
Regenerated alumina’s exceptional adsorption capacity can be attributed to its highly porous structure with various pore sizes and tetra-coordinated AlO4 sites, which accounts for its success at removing arsenic from groundwater in West Bengal, India. 뿐만 아니라, given that groundwater arsenic contamination spans across 79 blocks in 9 districts affecting over 15 million people across these regions is particularly noteworthy.
High Humidity Capability
Activated alumina has an exceptional moisture-adsorption capacity thanks to its extensive network of interconnected pores, while its polar surface attracts water molecules through physisorption, binding them securely within its pores until saturation occurs, when regeneration may become necessary for future moisture absorption. One key advantage of activated alumina over silica gel lies in its ability to retain its capacity even at higher humidity levels.
An activated alumina desiccant can absorb as much as 20% of its weight in water, so it’s crucial that its relative humidity (RH) level be monitored and replaced when reaching certain thresholds.
Activated alumina differs significantly from silica gel in that its regeneration does not involve extensive treatments, instead being easily restored through baking at temperatures below 1000 degC; this significantly lowers energy consumption during its regeneration and is much faster than other dry-pack desiccants like molecular sieve or silica gel; making it an excellent choice for applications where moisture control is of primary concern such as foreline traps to prevent backstreaming of rotary pump oil mist into systems.
Excellent Thermal Stability
Activated alumina is an exceptional thermally stable material and can be utilized in applications like high temperature regenerative separators and cleaning systems, where its ability to be reactivated through baking can extend sorbent life while upholding high levels of performance in any system.
Edwards FL20K foreline trap features excellent stability when applied in clean pumping systems to prevent back-migration of rotary pump oil mist into the system, such as our Edwards FL20K foreline trap equipped with activated alumina sorbent baskets for foreline oil mist trapping – these baskets offer exceptional trapping properties against oil mist which can be rejuvenated in an oven by baking it.
Aluminium oxides have minimal environmental impacts; in small doses, they do not pose any threat to aquatic life or soil and river ecosystems. 뿐만 아니라, their low water solubility means that aluminium oxide does not leach into soils and rivers from production residues; however, such material should be handled according to local regulations for disposal.
Versatility
The Edwards FL20K Foreline Inlet Trap is designed to prevent back-migration of rotary pump oil mist into your clean pumping system, with a removable basket containing activated alumina sorbent and an activated alumina can containing activated alumina sorbent with excellent trapping properties and long life before saturation; rejuvenation may be achieved by baking for two hours at 250 degC – 300 degC.
